It should be highlighted that for truly professional systems, the EC fan and controller should be products of choice! With this in mind, this unit would be appropriate for running the fan full time and at a constant speed and with a moderate amount of airflow.

This listing is for the 4" professional version which utilizes 4" ducting. The motor utilizes a 2 speed (high and low speed) sealed ball bearing design with an estimated life span of 50,000 hours. It also features an IP44 harsh environment rating to protect against basic moisture and particle intrusion. This is ideal for removing hot air in a closet or enclosure enclosure (built-in cabinetry...).

Consider with these units that massive airflow is not always better. With electronics the keys are adequate spacing of components and then usually just a basic flow of air around the components paying special attention to eliminating any dead/hot spots. These are areas where air just remains still and not circulating throughout the system. This unit is ideal provides a moderate and usually adequate amount of airflow for most applications. The primary difference in the professional version is the housing which is made from polypropylene which increases the durability of the unit and is more appropriate for attic installations.

General Information on Duct Fans

Due to the trend of addressing cooling and venting earlier in projects, during construction and when renovating, Cool Components has greatly expanded the line of duct fans. Using duct fans is superior in most respects and primarily because the fans are quieter, move more air, very efficient and are simply out of the way since they are typically installed in an attic, crawl space, or basement. With proper planning they should also be easily serviceable. Duct fans, as the name implies, utilize ducting to connect the fan unit to the areas where wish to remove air (intake) and directs that air to another area or preferably, to the HVAC return vent (exhaust). Generally the inline duct fans feature multi-speed motors and are powered with 110/120 current (220V versions are available).

There are several units available ranging from Residential to Professional versions with the primary difference being the residential housings are made from ABS while the Pro versions have a Polypropylene housing and come with optional EC (Electronic Controllable) fan motors. This is the latest advancement in inline duct fans as it allows high voltage fans to be controlled with low voltage controllers. Traditionally high voltage fans were only reliably controlled using 'step' control meaning there were 3 or 4 speeds that increased in a progression that usually left you hearing each time the unit took a 'step'. The EC fans provide for a smooth linear progression so the fans start slow and ramps the speed up smoothly (linear) as the temperature rises. As with all of Cool Components products, serviceability is also a key as the fan unit can be separated and cleaned without removing and having to re-attach the ducting. Then at the end of the life of the fan, it is very easy to swap out the fan also without removing the ducting. Another staple of these fans and the latest technologies is that the units are very efficient and are also fully recyclable.

Installation Notes

It's going to be covered in the instructions but preplanning is really critical with inline duct fans. Where and how to install the fan, how will run the ducting, the type ducting (size, insulated or not), the connection (duct box...), the exhaust, control... This is not something to do on the fly as you'll end up without the necessary parts and the system simply may not function as desired.
The fan units require a 110/220V AC power source at the fan unit (see notes on wiring for a high voltage controller)
High Voltage Fans using a high voltage controller, generally speaking (refer to the controller for more precise specs and instructions) requires high voltage feed (line voltage) will be supplied to the controller and then the load will be controlled by the control and routed to the fan unit where can be hard wired or wired to what will be a switched outlet.

If using a controller with remote sensor, ensure to consider where to place and run the sensor wire. All of our sensors can be extended using a 2 conductor wire, 20/22

Ensure to install ducting on the exhaust side even if the ducting will not be terminated as the unit operates best with a certain amount of back pressure. Also put a bend or two in the ducting which around a 3' section is adequate.

Installation Instructions

Proper planning is critical to the success of the installation. Ensure to properly plan the fan location considering powering and ducting the unit and also that it is serviceable and in an area where vibrations will not be felt or heard. An example is that if it is installed in a ceiling; consider what is above the unit as a bedroom may experience slight noise or vibrations. Ducting should be able to be run without sharp bends and in relatively close proximity from the vents, intake and exhaust, to the unit.
Once the location has been determined, it is at the installer's discretion on how to mount the unit. The unit can be hung or mounted to a wall or ceiling but it should not be simply set in place without fastening it to a structure. When fastening, it is recommended to use rubber or foam material to absorb vibrations. Attach the fan to a sturdy surface like a stud or other wood surface. Do not attach to a weak surface like sheetrock. In all cases use the fixed mounting bracket and appropriate bolts or screws to attach the fan.
To mount the fan unit, you must remove the center fan section from the ends and mounting bracket section. On some fans this requires removing the retaining screws and on other units the plastic retention clips, which slide off to the center. This ‘separation’ feature is for easy fan servicing without having to remove ducting.
If using flex duct, ensure the ducting is securely fastened to intake and exhaust flanges using ties and HVAC foil tape to ensure there are no air leaks. For insulated duct, both the inside and outside tubing should be secured. Hard piping can also be used. Note: Consult an HVAC Contractor Prior to Venting to the Outside of the Home or Building. Doing so significantly affects the load on the systems which is why it is not recommended to vent outside. This fan moves a high volume of air that will adversely affect HVAC systems if venting to the outside of the enclosed environment. We rarely recommend this venting option and typically recommend venting to the HVAC’s return vent or into another area within the enclosed HVAC environment such as a larger room or hallway within close proximity of an HVAC return vent.
Intake and exhaust locations should utilize duct boxes and protective/decorative grills. It may also be desirable to use grills that match existing HVAC grills so consult your HVAC contractor if this option is desired.
This fan comes pre-wired with a 120 volt power cord. Any additional or custom electrical wiring should only be done by a licensed electrician and should meet all local building, electrical, and mechanical codes. The units can be hardwired but a local disconnect would be highly recommended.
The Residential and non-EC Pro units can be used with standard high voltage fan controllers while the Professional EC (Electronic Controlled) units can be controlled using the EC controller. 8. When operating the unit, ensure there are no abnormal noises or vibrations. If there are, disconnect power and check the fan to ensure there are no obstructions.

Test Operation. After completing the installation ensure to fully test the unit for proper operation. Ensure that the impeller rotates freely and that there are no abnormal sounds and that air appears to flow freely.
